Welcome to The Early Year's section of my website, where I take you on a journey back in time through my older photography work captured approximately 40 years ago. My name is Anthony Calleja, and I am a photographer based in Oahu, Hawaii.
During those early years, I was deeply inspired by the renowned master of the decisive moment and black and white 35mm photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson. With his influence, I would wander the vibrant streets of San Francisco in search of those fleeting moments that held great meaning and significance. Armed with my trusty old Canon F-1 camera and a 50mm lens, I immersed myself in the world of candid black and white available light photography, capturing the essence of life unfolding before me.
One of the treasured images from that time is "The Patriarch," a portrait of my father, Pacifico Calleja, taken on his 76th birthday. He was not only my father but also a living testament to the love and sacrifices that define the human experience. The photograph serves as a heartfelt tribute to his presence in my life and the profound impact he had on shaping the person I am today.
Another significant image is the enchanting Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco, California, captured in 1981. This place holds a special place in my heart as it became the backdrop for a significant milestone in my life. Years later, it was here that I shared my first kiss with my beloved Genoveva, who would go on to become my loving wife and constant companion throughout my photographic journey.
These early years of my photography are a testament to the profound influence of great artists, personal connections, and the power of capturing fleeting moments in time. I invite you to explore this section of my website and immerse yourself in the stories and emotions evoked by these images from the past.
