In the early years of photography, many couples of humble means did not hire a photographer to document their actual wedding. Instead, they would pose for formal photographs in their best attire before or after the wedding. However, as technology advanced and became more portable, couples began to hire photographers to capture their special day at the wedding venue itself.

With the advent of color photography in the 20th century, capturing the entire wedding event became more common. The introduction of compact flash bulbs and improved lighting techniques further enhanced the quality of wedding photographs. Photographers would attend the wedding and later sell the photos to the couple, capturing both staged and candid moments.

In the present day, wedding photography has evolved into a comprehensive and documentary-style approach.
