My Experience Filing a VA Claim for PTSD

After many years, my PTSD came back, and I knew I needed help. I reached out to the Veterans Administration and filed a claim, but I didn’t understand the process or what was required.

When it came time to write my personal statement, I felt overwhelmed. I didn’t know how to explain what I had been through, and I was honestly afraid to put it into words. Without guidance or someone I trusted; my claim was denied.

That denial left me feeling lost.

Struggling and Trying to Cope

During that time, I was dealing with my trauma day by day. I was seeing a psychologist twice a week and a psychiatrist every two weeks just to manage what I was going through.

The nightmares were intense. Every night, I would force myself to stay awake because I was afraid to fall asleep. It took a toll on me both mentally and physically, but at the time, it felt like the only way to cope.

Finding the Right Help

Eventually, I found a company called Allsup, a Veterans Disability Appeal Service based out of Florida. I reached out and explained my situation.

They listened.

They set up an interview, and a few weeks later, they decided to take my case and help me through the appeals process. For the first time, I felt like I had someone on my side who understood what I was going through.

Progress Through the Process

With their help, my case began to move forward:

  • I was first awarded 10% disability
  • Then increased to 30%
  • Then 50%
  • Then 70%
  • Then 80%

At that point, I also reached out to my congressional representative, who helped apply additional pressure. Combined with Allsup’s continued work on my case, things finally started to change.

Reaching 100%

In the end, I was awarded 100% disability then 100% Individual Unemployability.
It was a long and difficult journey, but getting the right help made all the difference. I went from feeling completely lost and alone to finally being heard.

My Recommendation to Other Veterans

If you’re a veteran who has:

  • Been denied service connection
  • Felt overwhelmed by the process
  • Received a decision you believe is too low

I strongly recommend getting help.

Allsup focuses on assisting veterans with appeals, especially if your claim has been denied or if your VA decision is less than 12 months old.

You don’t have to go through this alone.
